loved school, loved everyone especially Ramono. I wish I was still there. The place you picked for me to stay was wonderful and the people made me feel like family. I had a great time.

     Dear Paolo,

I just wanted to write and tell you what a wonderful experience I had at the ceramic school in Deruta.
First of all, finding you on the web was great. After reading all about the school I instantly decided that I had to go and take a class. Since we already had our time share booked for a week and other engagements in place, I only had one single day that I could go to a class and you were able to accommodate that request and on Thursday, December 30th I arrived at the school at 8:30 a.m. and spent the entire day with Nicola as my private instructor. He was so gracious and he let me decide on what wanted to work on.

I, of course, selected something quite advanced as I had done ceramics for many years. I’m sure any instructor in the U.S. would have insisted that I work on something less complex but Nicola agreed to let me selected what I wanted to do.

I as just thrilled with his instruction, patience with me and command of the English language….we had no trouble communicating and at 4:00 p.m. I had completed my “work of art.”

I have only one regret…I wish I had learned about this many years ago. For years, I designed and created ceramics for Liberace for his various homes and personally designed ceramic gifts for his celebrity friends. Several of my pieces were auctioned off at Christy’s when his estate went on the auction block. I would have given anything to have created a plate like the one I made at the Deruta School for Liberace.

You can be sure that next year when we plan our trip to Italy, that I will book a week at the school. I already have an idea of what I would like to work on!

Thank you Paolo, for if it wasn’t for you handling my request on such short notice none of this would have been possible without you. Please email a copy of this to Nicola with my sincere thanks. Eloise Rothe

I attended the School of ceramics in Deruta in June of 2003. I was there for 10 days and took a 40 hour course in decoration. I am a High school ceramics teacher in Utah with 31 years of experience in ceramics. I learned about a whole new aspect of ceramics while in Deruta. The art of Maiolica is a beautiful and enjoyable part of ceramics. The staff at the school are wonderful, and I will count them as my personal friends forever. Nicola Boccini is like a son to me. His English is very good, and he is a great teacher. He can answer any and all technical questions you might have. The Master, Romano Ranieri is truly a master in the art of painting on ceramics. While he speaks no English, his demonstrations say it all. There is no communication gap in the world of art. Deruta is a fine little town with many good shops, but I recommend MOD which is on the ground floor of the school for your shopping needs. I stayed for 10 days in the apartment provided by the school. It is large and comfortable and within easy walking distance to the school. Paolo, the American contact for the school is very helpful and friendly and can make all arrangements for you. I had the pleasure of having lunch with him and his wife, as they happened to be in Deruta while I was there (he even picked up the tab for lunch). Deruta is within easy traveling distance to many great sites in Tuscany and Umbria. It is a short distance from Assissi. I rented a car for my stay. It cost about $300 for 10 days, and I recommend a car if you are staying in the area. There are many beautiful sites and hill towns within easy driving distance from Deruta. Would I recommend this school? Absolutely, not only for the valuable ceramic training, but also for the ambiance of Bella Umbria. Preston
